Graduation 2019

Congratulations to the graduating students of 2019. Today we had a beautiful mass service celebrating the students achievements. All the students were presented with a memento plaque and a school hoodie with ‘Class of 2019’ on the back by Principal Eimear O’Rourke and VP Eugene Doyle. The students put on a wonderful surprise performance signing and rapping to ‘See you again’ by Wiz Khalifa & Charlie Puth!

Family, Teachers and Friends went to the playhall for refreshments and end of year speeches.

It was a happy and emotional celebration. We wish all of our school leavers the very best of luck on their endeavors and we hope that they will achieve their dreams.

Confirmation Class 2019

TY Trip to ATHY

Transition Year Students took a trip to the Athy Heritage Centre and Shackleton Museum. Here they explored and discovered the brave and tremendous journey by Ernest Shackleton and team on the Endurance to the Antartic. They got to see real life exhibits of this journey, including the ‘Sledge’ that carried them across the ice. Students also enjoyed doing the student activity where they had to find answers to questions about Shackleton.
We also got to see John Minihan room, a world renowned photographer. John Minihan is sometimes known as ‘the man who shot Beckett‘. It was very app giving that today is National Poetry Day to see his photo exhibition, which includes photos of Nobel laureates such as Samual Beckett and Seamus Heaney.
Our Transition year students also got to see the unveiling of a Made of Athy plaque in honour of a collaboration by Leonard Cohen and John McKenna and their contribution to music and arts. This plaque was unveiled by President Michael D Higgins. This project is the brain child of local Music connoisseur Colm Walsh. Students listened to the speeches which is a great educational learning experience for their Youth Leadership Programme (Toastmasters) class. We would like to thank Brian Dooley and the Athy Lions Club for funding an ISL interpreter giving us access the the speeches.
After this we visited an Art Mural by Dublin artist Solus who is famous for Street Art. He painted a mural of local boxer Eric Donovan. Solus’ paintings normally have boxing gloves in them. This represent putting up a fight to conquer life’s obstacles.
Transition Year Students also used the journey to and from Athy on the bus to share their favourite Poetry because the 2nd of May is National Poetry Day in Ireland. Everyone enjoyed today’s trip, it was educational, cultural and great fun.

Leaving Cert Art Trip

As part of Leaving Cert Art, 5th and 6th year students went on a school trip to Newgrange, Co.Meath  with their art teachers Lorraine Creed and John Canning. The sun was shining and everyone really enjoyed visiting this 5000 years old Passage Tomb. If you like to read more information about Newgrange please visit www.newgrange.com.

EGG-celent Maths Tangrams

Easter week, 1A students learnt all about the different types of Triangles – such as Equilateral, Isosceles, Scalene, Right Angle Triangles and CONGRUENT triangles. They learnt all this with a fun Easter Egg Tangram activity where they coloured in the egg tangram, cut out the shapes and recreated an eggcelent and colourful bird. #Creativemaths #learningisfun

DEAR Drop Everything and Read

Students and Staff of Holy Family School took part in the National Drop Everything and Read (DEAR) Challenge on Friday the 12th of April at 12 noon. Thank you to Catherine McFarlane who has organised reading materials for all involved. We were treated to newspapers, magazines, books and comics. As Dr. Seuss says “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.”

Thank You FAI

Fantastic 3 Days FAI Camp to be had by all our Primary Students and Junior Post Primary Students. The camp came to a conclusion today with speeches by our Principal Eimear O Rourke who thanked everyone involved, and Oisin Jordan (FAI National Coordinator) who said that the 40 coaches from Carlow IT over the three days were exceptional and the Holy Family School Transition Years Students who also did an amazing job coaching all the juniors. Special thanks also went to teachers Geoffrey McCormack and Sean Herlihy. All of the juniors got an FAI football kit, an FAI backpack and also their very own football complementary to FAI. We are looking forward to FAI Camp 2020 already!

FAI CAMP

Transiiton Years Students and Students from Carlow IT College kick started the FAI (Football Association of Ireland) Camp, with 80 young boys and girls from Holy Family Primary school and junior Post Primary School. The atmosphere was buzzing with excitement and enthusiasm as all involved got to learn the challenges and skills of football. Our Transition Year students also created a colourful animated leaflet of basic ISL signs to give to the Carlow IT students, to help with communication during the camp. Special thank you to FAI National Coordinator Oisín Jordan and to FAI for the amazing football kit they have generously given to all of our players.
