YSI 2025 – Making Drive-Thrus Deaf-Friendly

Category : Post Primary

When we started our YSI project, we wanted to make a real
dierence for the deaf community. One thing we noticed
was how dicult it can be for deaf people to order at
drive-thrus — something most of us take for granted.

Miscommunication at the speaker can turn a simple trip
for food into a stressful experience.
To try and change that, we sent letters to fast food chains
and TDs, asking them to introduce things like visual
menus and easier ways to order. We also wrote and
performed a drama to show what it’s like to face these
everyday challenges. We attended the Mansion House in
Dublin city along with many other schools to showcase
our project and raise awareness on this issue.

Taking part in the YSI competition gave us the chance to
share our project and hear other inspiring ideas too. It’s
been an amazing experience, and we’re proud to have
helped raise awareness for an issue that’s often overlooked
and aects our community, the Deaf communi
