Maths Week in Holy Family School

Category : Post Primary

What a magical Mathematical week in the Holy Family School. Teachers and SNAs has organised a cross curricular learning with an emphasis on exploring maths. All the students in the school were put into groups named after famous Mathematicians like Pythagoras, Fibonacci, Lovelace etc.. Each group took turns in participating in Maths Trails, Maths Investigations, Maths Puzzles, and Maths exploring with other subjects. For example in Geography we had an activity where you had to match the heights to famous mountains and lengths to well-know rivers. In Home Economics we had to estimate the weight of a very large and heavy Pumpkin! We took pride in playing with the new handmade wooden mathematical puzzles that our new woodwork teacher Niall created with his students for our enjoyment with Maths. Students and Staff had great fun! Happy Maths Week Everybody! #Mathsweek2019 #IuseMaths

“Grow, Cook & Eat”

Category : Post Primary

Students in 6C have being working very hard with Mr. Dempsey growing vegetables in our garden and greenhouse.  It was an amazing sight to come back after the summer and see the greenhouse brimming with tomatoes, some sweetcorn and rhubarb.  Students picked the juicy vegetables and fruit and then brought them to the kitchen to use in their cookery class.  Students made succulent Italian bruschetta and left nothing for anyone to taste.  With the rhubarb they make sweet rhubarb muffins which they shared with their teachers.  We can’t wait to see what else they will produce for us to cook in the kitchen.

Coffee Morning in aid of Breast Cancer

Category : Post Primary

Well done to classes 4A/4B and 6C and their teachers Shirley Higgins and Shirley Wolverson for organising a coffee morning in aid of Breast Cancer. The students made lemon drizzle cake, banana cake, apple slice, mars bar Krispies, rocky road, malteaser bars, biscuit cake and the smell along the school corridors was just divine! They raised a fantastic €285!! Shirley would like to say a big thank you to Shirley, Suzanne, and Phil for all their help and to everyone who bought cakes on the day.

Tour of Seamus Heaney – Listen Now Again

Category : Post Primary

5A and 5B with teachers Cloudagh Groome and Tracey Burke were delighted to attend a special ISL tour of Seamus Heaney ‘Listen Now Again’ exhibition, in the Bank of Ireland Cultural and Heritage Centre on Westmoreland Street, Dublin 2. They provided an ISL tour to celebrate International Day of Sign Languages 2019. Our students and staff really enjoyed this exhibition which explores Seamus Heaney’s archive and gives an insight into his life and his writing process through viewing early drafts of his work, photographs and documents.

First Years at the National Concert Hall

Today, 1 A, B & C Class, teachers Mr.Canning, Ms.Owens, and Carmel & Derval visited the National Concert Hall to see ‘The Bluebell Project – Sometimes the Signal Jumps’. Special thanks to Brian Fleming from Dublin Culture Connects for inviting us to this moving performance which was also translated into ISL. We got to see a group from the Bluebell Project performed on stage with the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra.
This was followed with a lovely stroll through St.Stephan’s Green on a beautiful sun shining day where the students got to feed the birds. A little birdie told us they had great fun!

Trip to Paris

Category : Post Primary

Transition Years had a wonderful trip to Paris where they got to go and see many great places. They visited the Deaf café, Aquaboulevard (Waterpark), the Lourve (Art Museum) , the Science Museum , Montparnasse Tower, Trocadero, Arc deTrionphe, Champs-Elysees, Sacre-Coeur, Montmartre, Place de la Concorde and they even got to go to Disneyland! Other highlights included visiting the 1000 Signs Cafe which is a owned by a deaf owner and all the staff there are deaf. We also had amazing coffee there! When we were at Trocadero two of our students Japhet & Angelo got to dance with celebrity dancer Salif Guey who danced on the Ellen Show. In the Lourve our tour guide was a french deaf man and he used international sign language as he brought us on our tour. We really enjoyed the tour, he brought the art in the Louvre Museum to life. This was an amazing trip – a trip of a lifetime.

Sports Day 2019!

Category : Post Primary

The rain stayed away for Sports Day at Holy Family School for the Deaf. We had a very active day with races in the morning followed by Yoga and Orienteering! The day finished off with school leavers versus the other students football matches. The school leavers were not impressed that the other students won!

The main message for sports day was “Doing your best is better than being the best”. Well done to all for taking part. A big thank you to all the staff and to MJ for making the Sport Day 2019 so successful!
