St Patrick’s Day

Category : Post Primary

Happy St Patrick’s Day ☘️☘️☘️☘️
Here’s our students in the National Gallery of Ireland last week at the Stained Glass artwork of St Patrick. Today Our Taoiseach Leo Varackar gave a ministerial broadcast on the Corona Virus. He quoted ‘Today’s St Patrick’s Day will be like no other, it is one that we will never forget’. He also mentioned that now it is the ‘calm before the storm’, so please keep safe all our students, family and friends.

Home Schooling

We would like to thank all our students for their understanding of the national school closure situation. We were delighted to see them leaving our school calmly, with a work plan and establishing new email addresses knowing that there will be on-going support from their teachers at home.
However it is crucial for this national school closure policy to be effective and to  ensure  the suppression of spreading of the Corona Virus that all students are to stay at home and not to mix with other children.

This is a message from a consultant respiratory paediatrician at Cork Hospital.
“Message from consultant respiratory paediatrician at cork university hospital . I hope you all stay safe during this difficult time . The children will get through this no problem . Paediatric hospitals are empty in Italy at present after 3 weeks of school closure as the usual viruses stopped circulating .  Remember  with corona children are vectors  not victims .  In most epidemics young children are the transmitters . Therefore  for school closure to be effective it’s really important that the kids aren’t mixing with other kids while out of school. They will give it to each other silently pass it on to our loved ones. What we do now will contribute to how this develops in cork . Avoid situations that the children will interact  . If the community respond to this it will shut it down more than anything we do in hospital . From my experiences in the hospital this last week I would say that corona virus is closer to all of us than we realise  and the degrees of separation for all of us is getting narrower . I’m not that good at social media but if this could be shared as widely as possible with parents in cork it will help. This messsge needs to go viral to stop the virus.”

Lions Club of Ireland visit to Holy Family School

Category : Post Primary , Primary

Primary children presented Lions with Thank You Card

We were delighted to welcome our good friends, Lions Frank O Donoghue and Werner Schwerberg and other important Lions from other clubs such as;
Athy Lions Club,
Bray Lions Club,
Castleknock Lions Club,
Dublin Lions Club,
Dun Laoghuire Lions Club,
Howth Sutton Lions Club,
Carrick an Suir Lions Club.

All the Lions arrived at the Holy Family Primary School this morning on our school bus with our friendly bus driver Joey Watson. They were greeted by the children who were lined up in a guard of honor where the children presented Frank O Donoghue with a beautiful handmade Thank You Card. The children and conductor Shirley Higgins then impressed the Lions by performing three songs ‘A Million Dreams’, ‘You got a friend in me’ and ‘True Colours’.
The Lions were so impressed and they really enjoyed their performance.
The Lions then got to visit the classrooms and display of work where they got to see our new visualisers in action. These visualisers are a valuable resource to have in the classroom, they ensure that the teacher is facing the students at all times and that the student can see the teacher signing or lipread the teacher. We then went back up to the post primary school where all the lions were greeted by John Canning and Aideen Lynch.
Aideen and 4A class then showed the Lions how they used digital technology for their ‘Science & Me’ project which was the winning video in the ‘ReelLife Science Competition’. 4A used an ipad to create their video and they showed the screening of their winning video to the Lions.
Next the Lions visited Maggie Owens classroom where they got to see the new Chrome Books in action by playing a fun interactive kahoot quiz with class 2A students – the Lions V’s the Students! Our students came out top on the podium!!
We then visited the woodwork room where we got to see a special and beautiful wooden rocking horse which was created by our students and their woodwork teacher.
Finally we went to the reception area where we unveiled two photos of the Holy Family School sports bibs that the Lions have sponsored for our school. Overall, an exciting and special day. We loved that Frank and Werner and the Lions feels a part of our wonderful school.

Art Tour in the National Gallery of Ireland

Category : Post Primary

Art tour in the National Gallery of Ireland by our tour guide Saskia. We want to say special thanks to Abdul Bulbulia for our delicious lunch and for organising this wonderful tour. Our Leaving Cert students were very engaged and learned valuable information for their History of Art. Our JCSP students loved the tour and particularly loved the impressionist painting by Monet. We enjoyed art work by Picasso, Monet, Carrivagio, William Leech, Alberto Giacometti and Berthe Morisot to name a few. We also got to see some amazing stained glass artwork by Austin Clarke. These were so colourful and beautiful.
We also visited the DICEMAN exhibition in the Little Museum of Dublin. It was very interesting about a performance artist who was renowned for his creative and living advertisements. It was a great day with everyone feeling culturally inspired.

Lions Roar of Applause for Holy Family School Deaf Choir.

Category : Post Primary

Holy Family Deaf Choir and conductor Shauna Hamilton

The Lions roar of applause for the Holy Family Deaf Choir at their Convention in Ballina, Co Mayo.
The choir treated the convention to a magnificent performance of Ireland’s Call, This is Me, Fight Sing and Bruises. Holy Family School principal Eimear O Rourke commented on how proud she was of the choir and that they were great ambassadors of our school. Eimear also said thanks to choir conductor Shirley Higgins and to supportive staff Aideen Lynch, John Canning and Maggie Owens. Maggie answered some questions about her experience growing up in mainstream school and attending the school for the deaf in Cabra and how her experience has led her to become a teacher of the deaf, to become a deaf role model and to inspire young deaf students to become the best version of themselves, because they are the future. Our inquisitive students then asked the lions “Why are they called the Lions?” Which the District Governor replied that it was a great question and that it represents “Liberty, Intelligence, Our, National, Safety’. We would like to acknowledge Frank O Donoghue and Werner Schwanberg for their amazing support and friendship. The two gentlemen and the Ballina Lions Club have been very accommodating. We had such a warm welcome at Ballina train station which Sheamus (Ballina Lions) collected and escorted us to our hotel. Thank you for inviting us to your convention and giving us the honour to perform for your guest and especially the honour to listen to inspirational lady Mary Robinson First Lady President of Ireland.
It’s a weekend to remember forever.
