Holy Family Choir and Mary Robinson

Holy Family Choir were honoured and privileged to be invited by the Lions to attend the Keynote Speech by the first lady president of Ireland Mary Robinson, at the Lions Convention. Mary Robinson is an inspirational world leader and role model. She is identified with championing equality, human rights and climate justice. Our student Marcus (4th Year) who is also on the Green school committee says that he felt motivated and inspired to make a change. Our good friends from Dublin Lions Werner Schwerberg and Frank O Donoghue have been very accommodating and welcoming on our visit to Ballina. We are looking forward to performing for all the Lions tomorrow morning.

World Book Day

Category : Primary

Happy World Book Day to all our students, staff, family and friends.
To celebrate World Book Day special guests Zorro (Mr.Ward) and Mary Poppins (Ms.Owens) and sixth years students came to primary school to talk to all the children about the importance of reading.
The children told us all about their favourite books. They brought us into the magical world of Harry Potter, an adventure up to Space, on a trip to see the Wizard of Oz, we heard about the kiss that changed a frog into a handsome prince and we even heard about one book that had a small dragon inside the book! We loved hearing all of the children’s presentations about their book – well done to all the children. We all learned and recited
Dr. Suess famous quote “The more you read, the more you know, the more you learn, the more places you go”. Happy Reading Everybody!

World Book Day

Category : Post Primary

Students with Author John Burke

Happy World Book Day to all our students, staff, family and friends. To celebrate World Book Day we had many literacy treats in store. This morning we started off the celebrations by bringing our sixth years and special guests Zorro (Mr.Ward) and Mary Poppins (Ms.Owens) to the primary school to talk to all the children about the importance of reading.
The children told us all about their favourite books and we all recited Dr. Suess famous quote “The more you read, the more you know, the more you learn, the more places you go” .
After break students and staff dressed up as their favourite character and we had a Literacy Hunt where students experience cross curricular learning by visiting different subject classes to pick up different clues.
In the afternoon we had the privilege and pleasure of welcoming John Burke the author of the beautifully illustrated books such as Irelandopedia which gives you an an encyclopedic tour around Ireland giving you an insight into the history, culture and the richness of modern and ancient Ireland. John also judged the best costume for the staff and the students.
We are looking forward to tomorrow to see who won the prize for the best costume! Thank you to John Burke for visiting our school and answering all our students’ questions and to Mr.Ward for organising another fantastic fun filled learning day for Literacy Week, and special thanks to ISL interpreter Margaret Wolfe. Finally thank you to all our staff and students for making great effort for World Book Day.

Descriptive Skills Competition

Category : Post Primary

Today the students focused on descriptive skills to communicate about different aspects of various book covers to their peers. They took turns communicating and receiving the information. They drew on pages how they interpreted the information that was shared amongst them. This was an excellent challenge on improving our communication skills. The students and staff had great fun!

Make A Book Exhibition

Category : Post Primary

4A and 4C had a fantastic time at the JCSP Make A Book exhibition.
4A created a book on their project “Science and Me” and 4C presented their new printed book ‘Signs’ which is a collection of the monthly school newsletters that they created. They represented their school very well and their teachers Ms.Owens and Ms.Lynch were very proud of them. The students also had an opportunity to see all the creative books by the other schools involved. Wonderful creative collection for Literacy Day.
Well Done All.

Literacy Galore!

Category : Post Primary

Day 2 Literacy Week in Holy Family School.
Literacy Galore as students treated us all to acrostic poems, rapping, drama, and so much more. It was just awesome to see students confidently deliver their chosen item for Literacy week. We laughed and we cried. This event was just inspiring and superb!
Well done Mr. Ward and to all his students.
